Akhtala monastery and fortress are located in the village of Akhtala,in Lori Province. The Fortress was built in the late tenth century by the Kyurikyans. It is strengthened with huge ramparts and there are two pyramid-shaped watchtowers rising above from both sides of the main entrance. The fortress was known as Pghndzavank.
The monastery of Akhtala comprised of three churches is in the territory of the fortress. The main building of the monastic compound is Surb Astvatsatsin church.
At present, the monastery of Akhtala has pilgrimage days (September 20-21).
