The first bridge in Vayots Dzor was built by Bishop Sargis on the orders of Prince Tarsaich, father of historian Stepanos Orbelian. Since the bridge was built during the reign of Prince Tarsaich (1273-1290), it can be dated to the 13th century. Academician V. Harutyunyan noted that the use of ancient methods of fastening stones at the base of the bridge, testifies to its antiquity and that the bridge can be dated to the antique, at least, early medieval period, when the Hellenistic traditions were still tenacious.
